Microsoft Live Labs has introduced a new service called Photosynth. Photosynth is a Breakthrough Visual Medium which goes far beyond how you now view, experience and share photos. Its a totally new concept which enables you transform regular digital photos into a three-dimensional, 360-degree experience.

With Photosynth, you can look up or down, pan from left to right, zoom in, or pull back to reveal the full sense of where you were. Synths constitute an entirely new visual medium. Photosynth analyzes each photo for similarities to the others, and uses that data to estimate where a photo was taken. It then re-creates the environment and uses that as a canvas on which to display the photos.

In order to use Photosynth you'll need to install free software application to your computer from http://photosynth.com. This software works in concert with the Photosynth Web site, which is also a free service.

As when I tried to test drive Photosynth it was turned to special static/read-only mode. This is what they said..

"Getting ready for the launch we did massive amounts of performance testing, built capacity model after capacity model, and yet with all of that, you threw so much traffic our way that we need to add more capacity. We are adding that extra horsepower right now and should be back up shortly."

This is beautiful technology.....I think very soon there will be high res 3D models of most historical sites available on the internet.

In photosynth you cannot carry the image outside of the environment in which it is created. What would be really useful is a tool that allows these models to be created and then they can be posted on say this blog!
